Course overview

This module aims to introduce learners to simulation-based education, that is simulation designed with educational objectives, building on the Healthcare Simulation: Principles and Practice, and Healthcare Simulation: Management, Leadership, Design & Delivery modules, to detail its applications, related theory and practical considerations that are unique to this form of simulated practice.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:

  1. Judge the significance of simulation as an educational tool and the interrelationship of educational theories and practices that underpin the spectrum of simulation-based education activity.
  2. Employ original and innovative ideas in relation to SBE courses and curriculum design, whilst critically appraising existing courses and programmes across a range of institutions.
  3. Apply and critically appraise simulation modalities specifically related to SBE, demonstrating how to ensure a safe simulated environment and the psychological safety of participants.
  4. Practice a considerable degree of autonomy in overseeing a SBE programme, incorporating measures of evaluation, performance and transference.

Assessment

Workbook: 100% weighting, 50% pass mark.
Learning Outcomes: 1, 2, 3 & 4.
Outline Details: Students will complete the workbook exercises, questions, and referenced action plans.

All elements of summative assessment must be passed to pass the module.

Formative Assessment: Students will undertake individual and group work to consider the broad spectrum of SBE being conducted and to design original and innovative thinking in this context. Their creative presentation will be added to their portfolio of experience.

Prerequisites

Applicants are expected to have successfully completed a Level 6 programme of study or have equivalent study/experience and have the required experience within a specified scope of simulated practice.

Applicants interested in this programme must have the required experience and qualifications according to the nature of their scope and context of their practice, role and profession.

  • A first degree; normally 2:2 or above; or equivalent study/experience
  • Relevant post-qualifying experience in simulated practice
