Course overview

This module aims to: (1) equip students with skills to understand the methods and results of economic evaluations of simulation interventions; (2) enable students to critically appraise evidence from economic evaluations; (3) conduct a basic economic evaluation of a simulation intervention; and (4) analyses data to understand the economic impact of providing such interventions.

Indicative content:

  • Understanding the role of economics in evaluating healthcare simulation approaches
  • Developing measures to collect resource use information relating to simulation for use in evaluations
  • Appropriate outcome measures for use in economic evaluations of simulation interventions
  • Combining costs and outcomes
  • Analysing health economic data
  • Economic modelling to assess cost-effectiveness of simulation interventions
  • Critical appraisal of published economic evaluations
  • Dissemination of findings from economic evaluations to key stakeholders

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:

  1. Understand and critically apprise published economic evaluations of simulation interventions.
  2. Contribute to the design of their own economic evaluations.
  3. Design and run an economic model to assess cost-effectiveness of interventions.
  4. Present findings of economic evaluations to healthcare decision makers and other relevant stakeholders.

Assessment

Coursework: 80% weighting, 50% pass mark.
Learning Outcomes: 2 & 3.
Outline Details: Students will write an economic modelling proposal to assess the cost-effectiveness of a specified simulation-based intervention. 3000 words.

Presentation: 20% weighting, 50% pass mark.
Learning Outcomes: 1 & 4.
Outline Details: Students will present the findings of a chosen economic evaluation to their peers.
Duration: 10 minutes long with 15 minutes for questions.
