Course overview
This module aims to introduce learners to the developing field of Transformative Simulation, that is simulation as a tool to transform health and care through learning but not to educate, building on the Healthcare Simulation: Principles and Practice, and Healthcare Simulation: Management, Leadership, Design & Delivery modules, to detail its applications, related theory and practical considerations that are unique to this form of simulated practice.
Indicative content:
- Assessment methods
- Theory
- Transformative Simulation
- Simulation-based intervention
- Simulation-based innovation
- Simulation-based Improvement
- Simulation-based Involvement
- Simulation-based Influence
- Creativity and innovation
- Evaluation
- Impact
- Knowledge exchange
- Influence
- Language and communication skills
- Managing complexity
- Speciality focused skills sessions and seminars according to the nature of the student’s scope and context of practice, role and profession.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:
- Interpret the significance of using simulation as a transformational tool, as well as its key differences to and interrelationship with SBE.
- Employ a range of theories and practices that underpin the spectrum of transformational simulation activity, critically appraising its applications and identify where knowledge gaps exist.
- Illustrate an ability to construct reasoned arguments for why a transformative simulation approach is required, applying creative and innovative uses of the approach to initiate change.
- Formulate original thinking in terms of stakeholder involvement, delivery, and locations, whilst demonstrating a considerable degree of autonomy in the preparation, intervention and evaluation requirements, and the recording of impact.
Assessment
Presentation: 100% weighting, 50% pass mark, numerical grade mode.
Learning Outcomes: 3 & 4.
Outline Details: Students will generate, present and convince peers of a proposal for a Transformative Simulation project utilising visual tools and technology.
Portfolio of Experience: Pass / Fail grade mode.
Learning Outcomes: 1 & 2.
Outline Details: Students will produce a portfolio of experience that demonstrates their development throughout the programme through a series of development plans and reflections. 3000 words.
Formative Assessment: Group exercises will be undertaken, and a reflective piece written to add to their portfolio of experience that brings their portfolio additions together as a whole.
