Course overview
This module aims to facilitate the student in developing their baseline understanding of the principals of simulation, the types available, its history and how they play out in practice. Critically evaluating and reflecting what they encounter in order to be able to utilise simulation creatively.
Indicative content:
- Historical practices
- Theoretical underpinnings of simulated practice
- Policy, regulatory and ethical frameworks
- Management and Leadership skills
- Simulation modalities
- Critical reasoning skills
- Creativity skills
- Technical skills
- Simulation-based research
- Simulation-based education
- Speciality focused skills sessions and seminars according to the nature of the student’s scope and context of practice, role and profession.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:
- Demonstrate critical insight into the history of healthcare simulation, its associated terminology, and key concepts.
- Critically evaluate simulation-related policy, regulatory and ethical frameworks, considering the wider context of simulation communities of practice, and the latest initiatives.
- Critically reflect on a range of modalities, facilities design, operations, and management requirements when conducting a simulation activity.
- Employ creativity to initiate and manage change through simulated practice, identifying the entire simulation process from rationale to evaluation.
Assessment
Poster 20% weighting, 50% pass mark.
Learning Outcomes: 3 & 4.
Outline Details: Students will generate a poster that shows the history and development of a simulation specific activity, area or equipment of their choice.
Coursework: 80% weighting, 50% pass mark.
Learning Outcomes: 1 & 2.
Outline Details: Students will critically appraise a range of theory and practice and the interrelationship between them within the context of healthcare simulation. 3,000 words.
Formative Assessment: Undertake group work focused around a simulated case study which will be documented in their portfolio of evidence. Formative assessments will also be completed in the classroom through group work and feedback. Individual tutorials with module leader.
