Course overview

This course can only be taken as part of a programme.


This module aims to facilitate the development of knowledge and skills in order that the student is able to work at the level of advanced practice. It is for those practitioners who will be leading and managing complex situations and who have to make decisions that impact on service delivery and outcomes for individuals, families and carers. The module therefore aims to address leadership challenges within service delivery.


Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:

1. Critically evaluate key theoretical and conceptual frameworks that underpin personal and organizational leadership and management;

2. Systematically apply relevant leadership and management theory, concepts, models and frameworks to complex situations;

3. Critically analyse the legal, ethical, professional and organizational policies, and frameworks that govern service delivery;

4. Critically evaluate the dynamics of leadership and management within their own organization;

5. Critically evaluate their own and others’ leadership and management styles in relation to care delivery;

6. Systematically review care delivery to inform own and others’ practice, formulating and implementing strategies to make improvements;

7. Create research-informed approaches to leading teams and individuals.


Assessment

Presentation - 30% LO - 2, 3, 4, 6, 7. Pass mark - 50%

Individual digital presentation which addresses a challenge focussed on leading and managing teams and individuals.  


Written Report - 70% LO - All. Pass mark - 50% 4000 words.

A written report of 4000 words which critically analyses and makes recommendations concerning a key leadership or management challenge within their own organisation. All elements of summative assessment must be passed to pass the module. Nature of FORMATIVE assessment supporting student learning: 1. Presentation of essay plan to group with peer assessment and critique. 2. Student led seminar - Application of one change management theory to a work related issue.

Prerequisites

i) A first degree; normally 2:2 or above; or equivalent study;

ii) Current registration with the NMC or HCPC or other relevant PSRB;

iii) Relevant post-qualifying experience or equivalent, with evidence of study post-qualifying /initial registration, this study providing the underpinning knowledge and skills required for the development of a specialist role/practice

iv) Currently working no less than 20 hours per week within an appropriate role with relevant experience; v) Agreement from their manager that they are in a role that facilitates any required assessment of clinical practice.

vi) Applicants who do not have English as their first language must demonstrate an IELTS score of at least 7 (University requirement for non-EU students only).
