Course overview
This course can only be taken as part of a programme.
This work based module aims to facilitate the student in developing advanced clinical practice capabilities and specialist competencies in managing clinical care by working in partnership with individuals, families and carers in the context of inter-professional working teams.
The module aims for students to develop critical analysis and synthesis of managing complex issues presented in a range of settings in order to work flexibly; and adapt to unfamiliar professional settings through application of innovative solutions to improve and enhance people’s experiences and outcomes.
The student will be able to recognise and reflect on the level of competence required within any given situation and recognise their own limits and level of competence. It will give them opportunity to develop a portfolio of evidence that they will submit for the module assessment and will then develop across the programme.
Students will have opportunity to develop their theoretical and practice knowledge within the practice environment whilst being assessed as part of the MSC Advanced Clinical Practice or MSc Advanced Clinical Practice (Degree Apprenticeship)
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:
1. Critically reflect on their broadened level of responsibility and autonomy and the limits of own competence and professional scope of practice, in order to critically evaluate their role within the context of partnership and inter-professional working;
2. Demonstrate team leadership, and the ability to adapt and respond to changing, complex and unfamiliar work environments based on critical judgement drawn from evidence-based knowledge of local populations health needs;
3. Critical reflect on own learning needs and those of others and evidence the ability to support health literacy by empowering individuals, being a role model, educator, supervisor, coach and mentor;
4. Critically reflect on decisions made when using a variety of holistic assessments strategies, to initiate and evaluate a range of interventions whilst ensuring the safety of individuals and families through enhanced professional judgement skills in managing risk;
5. Evidence the underpinning subject –specific competencies, knowledge skills and behaviours relevant to the role setting and scope and demonstrate application of the capabilities to these as appropriate to the individual role, setting and scope.
Assessment
Portfolio of Practice - Pass/Fail LO - 1-5 The word length is negotiable depending upon the level and substantive nature of the evidence provided. The portfolio of practice will comprise:
i) A Workbook focusing on pathophysiology and altered pathophysiology as relevant to their specialist area
ii) Assessment of Advanced Clinical Practice Capabilities and competencies as relevant to specialist area of practice
iii) Reflections on practice within which the students will map their educational development and practice experience against the four pillars of clinical practice, leadership and management, education and research; and a professional development plan. Reflective Log - 100% Lo - 1 -5 Pass mark - 50% 4500 words. The students will complete three reflection on practice within which the students will map their educational development and practice experience against the four pillars of clinical practice, leadership and management, education and research. They will also complete a professional development plan. Once completed this will comprise part of the portfolio of practice. All all elements of summative assessment must be passed to pass the module. Nature of FORMATIVE assessment supporting student learning: Observed consultation by practice assessor in the practice area on which they will receive feedback. Formative assessments will also be completed in the classroom through group work and feedback. Individual tutorials with academic assessor/pathway leader.

Prerequisites
i) A first degree; normally 2:2 or above; or equivalent study
ii) Current registration with the NMC or HCPC or other relevant PSRB
iii) Relevant post-qualifying experience or equivalent, with evidence of study post-qualifying /initial registration, this study providing the underpinning knowledge and skills required for the development of a specialist role/practice
iv) Currently working no less than 20 hours per week within an appropriate role with relevant experience
v) Agreement from their manager that they are in a role that facilitates any required assessment of clinical practice
vi) Applicants who do not have English as their first language must demonstrate an IELTS score of at least 7 (University requirement for non-EU students only)
