This is an exciting new part-time apprenticeship programme (including an End Point Assessment) for healthcare professionals who wish to meet the requirements of the Enhanced Clinical Practitioner. Student apprentices will complete 100 credits at level 6 and 20 credits at level 7 to be awarded the Graduate Diploma in Enhanced Clinical Practice. The 120 credits will be completed part time over 2 years with 60 credits in year 1 and 60 credits in year 2. The inclusion of 20 credits at level 7 in year 2 facilitates the transition to master’s level study in the future.
An individual learning plan for each apprentice will be discussed at the point of interview and students who have completed standalone CPD modules previously at Level 6 may be able to use these credits through RPL (recognition of prior learning process) towards their graduate diploma. Please discuss this with the programme leader in the first instance. A maximum of 50% RPL is permitted for this programme.
Programme Aims and Philosophy
The underpinning philosophy for this course is to provide a flexible, inclusive way for Healthcare Professionals to enhance their practice by achieving an apprenticeship / degree level qualification which can be a steppingstone for future studies.
The aim of the course is therefore to:
- Provide Healthcare Practitioners with the clinical knowledge and skills to demonstrate enhanced practice.
- Complement existing and new knowledge with research skills and specific career-enhancing options that will further assist in enhancing practice.
- Enable Healthcare Professionals to critically discuss, problem solve and initiate change in their practice.
- Further develop skills of reflection to enable Healthcare Professionals to reflect upon own practice and to continue the process of personal development and lifelong learning
- Enable Healthcare Professionals, with a few unattached or associate CPD academic learning credits, to consolidate them for contributing up to 50% of the new award (widening participation in higher education).
Degree Apprenticeship End-Point Assessment:
Under the Department of Education Skills Funding Agency Apprenticeship Funding Rules (February 2017), all apprentices are required to complete an end-point assessment.
The purpose of the end-point assessment is to test in a synoptic way the values, skills knowledge and behaviours as set out in the Apprenticeship Standard ST0895.
The non-integrated end point assessment for the Degree Apprenticeship Enhanced Clinical Practitioner consists of two parts:
- Quality Improvement proposal report with question-and-answer session
- Professional discussion underpinned by portfolio of evidence which will be completed during the course. Apprentices will commence their portfolio in year 1 and complete and submit it as part of the portfolio module.

ECP Course Structure (Remember each applicant will discuss their pathway at interview)
Year 1 (60 credits) at level 6 (some students may RPL previous CPD courses)
Option 1: Critical Care (NURS 1632 and NURS 1633) 30 credits each
Option 2: General Practice Nursing (NURS 1531 or NURS 1551) 30 credits each and either NURS 1162, NURS 1194, NURS 1395, OMED 1138, NURS 1528)
Option 3: Sexual Health (NURS 1323, OMED 1145, OMED 1392, or OMED 1146) 30 credits each
Option 4: Midwifery (OMED 1274 & OMED 1144) 30 credits each
Option 5: Mental Health (all 15 credit modules) (NURS 1200 & NURS 1535 & NURS 1536 & NURS 1534)
Option 6: General (to be discussed with programme leader)
Part time: Year 2 (60 credits)
Compulsory Core Course for all applicants: OMED 1393 Teaching, Supervision and Assessment for Advanced Practice (20 Credits – Level 7)
Then all students will complete a 40-credit portfolio module at level 6:

Prerequisites
Before starting this apprenticeship, an apprentice must meet the gateway requirements. For this apprenticeship they are:
- Registration with a statutory healthcare regulator including: NMC, HCPC, Social Work England, or with one of the following accredited voluntary registers: The Academy for Healthcare Science, Register of Clinical Technologists or Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists.
- Apprentices must undertake revalidation processes or audit their continuing professional development where these apply.
- Apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this level prior to taking the End Point Assessment.
- For those with an education, health and care plan or a legacy statement the apprenticeship’s English and maths minimum requirement is Entry Level 3. A British Sign Language (BSL) qualification is an alternative to the English qualification for those whose primary language is BSL.
Additional requirements that may apply:
- Each module has its own pre-requisites that may apply (please see individual module specifications)
- Some clinical practice modules for example, critical care, midwifery, or general practice require applicants to be patient facing for a minimum of 21 hours per week and have the support of a clinical manager and appropriately qualified assessor
