Course overview

The family is one of the oldest and most universal of all social institutions. It can exert a powerful influence on individuals in terms of experiences of health and illness and are important as a source of caring and information about health and illness (Braine & Wray 2016).Typically, people do not expect or plan to be carers –‘it just happens’ and it can happen suddenly or gradually. Caring can become a way of life but knowing of the carers’ existence, and respecting them is important, as their role can be challenging and demanding. In the UK, the rights and recognition of carers has been enhanced through The Care Act 2014 and the Children and Families Act 2014. This module supports the guidance from NHS England around supporting carers and the NHS Long Term Plan.

This course aims to develop the knowledge, values and skills for collaborative family support.
